First Successful Face Transplant Gives New Hope to Patients

A team of highly skilled surgeons hailing from Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont (CIUSSS de l’Est-de-l’Île-de-Montréal) achieved a remarkable milestone as they executed the inaugural facial transplant in Canada.

Under the leadership of the distinguished plastic surgeon, Dr. Daniel Borsuk, and in close partnership with the University of Montréal, this pioneering surgical endeavor breathed fresh optimism into the life of a 64-year-old man bearing the burden of severe facial scars.

The surgical team consisted of nine skilled surgeons specializing in plastic surgery, ENT (ear, nose, and throat), and maxillofacial surgery. This unprecedented medical and scientific accomplishment was made possible by the dedication of the entire team.

In addition to the medical expertise, the contributions of various partners were essential to the success of the face transplant. Johnson & Johnson, for example, generously donated medical equipment and surgical items, further supporting the progress of this innovative procedure.
